The project for Parco della Lanterna, a symbol of Genoa, is an opportunity to give back to the city an area of great importance for its identity, currently compromised by the intertwining of port infrastructures. The project will create a new public park of about 6 hectares that aims to change the relationship between the city, the lantern, the port and the sea, evoking Genova’s history and prefiguring its future.

The landscape project, made possible by the construction of a new tunnel under the harbour, will also create an array of spaces that link the park to the city. These aim to bring back the memory of the past experience of approaching the city and the Lantern from the sea, as well as the old system of ramparts. This will also be achieved through the use of terracing and the creation of sights and points of view surrounded by natural elements.

A high-quality promenade connects Via Sampierdarena and Villa Pallavicino Gardino with a square, that allows access to the park from east. Here, the main path, with a slight slope, runs along clearings and terraces shaded by a Mediterranean forest and equipped for play, sport, relaxation, until it reaches the large clearing at the bottom of the monument.

The landscape design project reinterprets and pays a tribute to the historic Genoese parks and gardens, offering a high-quality multisensory perceptive experience. The rich presence of nature diminishes the heat island effect, aiming to promote a pleasant microclimate year-round and the use of spaces even in the hottest months, thanks to the abundant shade of the equipped areas. The proposed natural system – rich, varied and multispecific – also represents an important oasis of biodiversity capable of multiplying the value of the project in terms of ecosystem services, alongside the various details and nature-based solutions introduced for irrigation, drainage and management aspects of the park.
